  VULNERABILITY and MR. VANDERBILT
Pair and Team games are for tournaments, while Rubber Bridge and Chicago can be played privately at home. Rubber Bridge requires that a team win two games to win the rubber and get a bonus. Once a team wins one game, they are on the verge of winning the rubber. (Winning the rubber does not mean to be awarded some birth control
device). This condition of having won one game is called VULNERABILITY.  To be vulnerable means penalties and bonuses are increased.
Where did this idea of vulnerability come from? It was aboard the S.S Finland, in the mid 1920's, on a long cruise from California to the Caribbean, that a Mr. Harry Vanderbilt and friends were playing Bridge. A young lady kibitzer suggests that the side that wins a game, be in jeopardy or Vulnerable. In the course of the trip Vanderbilt devises
the modern Bridge scoring system (Contract Bridge). Most of the trick score and bonuses that he worked out aboard the ship are used today. And the factor of Vulnerability is included in Mr.Vanderbilt's scoring protocol.
