DECEIVING DEFENDERS

Who can I deceive? Good question. Possible answers: the IRS; my wife; my Bridge partner (who may also be your wife); your boss (who may also be your wife). But watch it. If something goes wrong it could mean jail, divorce, loss of job, or playing in a vulnerable oubled/redoubled contract with only 5 trumps. (The penalty is a little higher than the last four digits of your Social Security number.) So it is important to make sure that the consequences of your chicanery can do no harm. The ideal time to employ deception is when your partner is the Dummy. (Kibitzers can also safely be deceived . . . but only if they really want to.)
When you are Declarer and partner is Dummy, you can deceive your opponents at will. Your partner, who is Dummy is dead (in French the Dummy is aptly named le mort.), and  cannot react. As Declarer you need have no inhibitions about telling lies. Nothing bad will happen - to you; the sky will not fall down.
To get results, however, your opponents have to be members of the AAA: Awake, Aware, Alert. You can never hoodwink someone who is brain dead or approximates brain deadness. It is the experts, or so called experts, that watch the
spots on the cards that are the best candidates for your BBB: Big Bridge Bamboozle. The beginner or novice will ignore your tricky ploys and not be taken in by the con. The better your opponents, the better the chances of getting good results by deception. Let us now see what deceptive tactics are at our disposal.
